History of the Club
The next 15 years: Years 26 to 40
We still have 2 charter members in the Club, Ern Sconce and
John Day. These 2 dynamic Lions have a wonderful perspective of the Club and
provide the lessons of history that the new members do not have. They are both
thinkers and planners and keep the Club moving forward. Not only did the club
get two dedicated workers in Ern and John, the club gained the dedicated
services of Marj and Sally.
As members have aged we do less physical work but have formed
an effective liaison with the City of Prospect. We have worked together to
provide a sailcloth over a playground and a barbecue at the Whittle Reserve
Skate Park. We provided the materials for the Council to develop a Bike Track at
Broadview Oval.
The Club has maintained its focus
on the disadvantaged of our community. We funded 9 children from Kilburn area to
attend YMCA camps on Kangaroo Island in 2004. For many previous years children
from the Blair Athol area had this opportunity. We have funded a Hart Walker
totally and another and a Pony Walker as Zone projects. These enable severely
disabled children to stand upright and move without support from others. We
provided a talking typewriter and tape recorder for a blind student to study at
University. Our involvement with the disadvantaged has been an ongoing focus for
the Club over 40 years.
We have initiated health projects across the state as
Multiple District projects. These projects have had a major influence on the
health of people. One was the Mammogram Screening that now is Australia wide and
providing early detection of breast cancer. Recently we initiated the early
hearing-screening program for newborn infants across the State.
With
the introduction of poker machines our clubs fundraising, as did all other
voluntary organisations, suffered. We have been creative in finding other ways
to raise funds. Our bottles and cans collection has grown to become our most
significant annual fundraiser. We work and worked with other groups usually
providing catering services. Are we any good at catering! We provided catering
for a while on Sundays at the Old Adelaide Gaol. We work with the City of
Prospect providing catering to their February Music in the Park events. We work
with the Prospect Council of Churches providing a Carols Program in December. We
have been at the Prospect Fair for (Ern will know exactly) as long as it has
been going over 25 years.
is always better when a team forms to do the work. Our local efforts rely on
team work with the members and partners contributing. The Lions organisation
allows us to be effective in national and inter-national programs that we
support annually.
When a person joins
Lions, almost invariably his/her partner also gets involved with the Club. We
are extremely grateful for and appreciative of the efforts of our partners who
have not been Lions but have contributed greatly to its cause. Thanks for your
efforts over 40 years.
IN APPRECIATION
In
recognition of the contribution of the Lions Clubs of Turkey, especially Lion
Dr. Enzar Tore, in providing free web page hosting for Lions Clubs everywhere,
the LIONS CLUB OF PROSPECT - BLAIR ATHOL. proudly displays the flag of Turkey on our
site.
Click on the flag to go to the web site of Lion Dr. Enzar's home club - the
Lions Club of Canakkale.
As an extension to the
Turkish Lions' contribution, the Brisbane Ekibin Lions Club of MD 201 Q1
(Australia) offer assistance to Lions Clubs who want to take advantage of the
Turkish Lions offer, but are not familiar with web publishing. They've already
set up many sites for Lions Clubs world-wide, using Lionwap.
If your club wants to be on the internet, and would like some help, leave a
message in the Ekibin Guest Book by clicking on the image above. This is a FREE
SERVICE, so you don't spend a cent for their work. As Lionwap is also FREE, this
means you get a web site that you NEVER have to pay for. - Is that a deal or
what?
All your Club has to do it have some-one update and maintain your page, which
needs not take more than a few minutes each month. The Ekibin Lions will even
give you some tips on that!
